Congresswoman Sherrill launches #SummerofSALT advocacy campaign
From the Congresswoman’s newsletter:
When I speak with my constituents about the issues that impact them the most, a critical issue that comes up time and time again is the SALT deduction cap implemented in the 2017 tax bill. This cap imposes a harmful double tax on New Jersey residents and creates one of the largest marriage penalties in the federal tax code, not just for the wealthy but for middle class residents in every corner of my district.
That’s why this summer I launched the #SummerofSALT advocacy campaign to highlight the negative impact of the SALT deduction cap on residents of NJ-11, including our teachers, firefighters, health care workers, and seniors. I’ve been fighting for relief since my first day in office and this summer I’m turning up the heat on Congress to get this done.
At my kick-off event, I was joined by President of the American Federation of Teachers Randi Weingarten, Woodland Park Mayor Keith Kazmark, Fire Fighters Association of NJ Treasurer Matthew Caliente, Kyle Hughes of NJ Firefighters’ Mutual Benevolent Association, immediate past president of New Realtors Angela Sicoli, Sue Butterfield, President of Passaic County Education Association (NJEA), Montclair Councilor Bob Russo, and Woodland Park resident and former nurse Joan Murko.
We kept the first week of the #SummerofSALT going strong in Washington last Wednesday when Randi and I joined Representatives Tom Suozzi, Josh Gottheimer, Lauren Underwood, Jamie Raskin, Bill Pascrell, Donald Norcross, Tom Malinowski, and Mike Levin along with IAFF General President Ed Kelly and IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer Frank Lima to highlight how the cap harms union families across the country.
The #SummerofSALT will continue throughout the season with events like these, stops at small businesses, and much more. Keep an eye on my social media pages for more updates and events!
This week, my colleague Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York organized a special order hour on the House Floor to make our case to eliminate the SALT deduction cap. I joined him, along with other members of the SALT Caucus, to speak on behalf of New Jersey families who are getting taxed twice under the SALT deduction cap as part of my #SummerofSALT initiative.
